The point of going smart isn’t the meter, it’s what you do with the data afterwards. Meter Reading Operations is the team and the workflow that turns a stream of half-hourly readings into reliable, billing-grade energy + water data.
What the day-to-day looks like
- Continuous reads. The HES receives reads from every meter at the meter’s configured interval, typically 15-60 minutes. Communication errors and anomalies flag immediately.
- Integrity checks. Automated scripts compare each reading against historical patterns, expected ranges, and the meter’s profile. Zeros, spikes, negative flow, and reverse readings get flagged.
- Human review. A meter-data analyst reviews the exception queue daily. Easy fixes (a comms dropout, a missed read) are handled in place. Harder ones (a tamper event, an installed meter that’s not reporting) trigger an on-site technician dispatch.
- Monthly energy balance. A reconciliation per site at month-end matches the bulk meter against the check meters and the tenant meters. The variance is investigated and quantified.
- Fault log + escalation. Faults open as tickets in the IFMS fault logging system, with weekly and monthly escalation paths into property and centre managers.
Why property teams move off manual reads
Manual reads land metering slips weeks after the meters are read, so a water leak can run for a month or more before anyone sees it, and the losses are already banked by the time the slip arrives. Continuous remote reading closes that window: outages are detected quickly, usage on vacant buildings is monitored in real time to cut wastage, and validated reads replace error-prone manual captures. The month-end reconciliation then accounts for utilities across the site and balances what came in against what was consumed, so there is no unaccounted usage hiding in the gap.
